Your Life Has A Script
“Im so good at promoting other people, but when it comes to myself, I freeze.”
A few years ago, if you asked me why I wasn’t telling my story publicly, I would say, “I’m so good at telling other people’s stories, but when it comes to mine, I freeze.” It was the only way to explain the fact that I had created platforms for so many talents who had attained great success and influence, even though people didn’t really know who I was. I would tell myself that I only wanted to be behind-the-scenes. I didn’t care who got the credit. I just wanted to serve. I wasn’t lying, it was how I felt at the time and what I believed that I wanted. So, I lived this story out - Adaora, the kingmaker, the one behind the scenes that makes magic with everyone with whom she comes in contact with. The one whose power is felt, but not seen. Such a powerful narrative (*insert thunder & lightning)!
Fast Forward to more recent years, I realized that I was living in a story that was only a chapter in my life - not my whole story. It is very easy for us to get stuck living out a narrative that may have served us well in a particular season, but isn’t going to serve us well in our next season. But we’re sometimes willing to die on the hill of, “I’m self aware enough to know that it’s what I want.” As though there aren’t several times in our life where we have to choose what we need, over what we want. As humans, we have the ability to adapt to our choices especially where we recognize that it is important for our growth. So why are you holding on to a story whose season has passed?
If you’ve followed my journey long enough, you’ll know that there are 3 things I say a lot:
“Embrace the AND….”
“There are Times & Seasons.…”
“Time is a Great Storyteller….”
All three statements are connected in a way that is important to HOW I have chosen to live my life.
You see, we’re a collection of the stories that we tell ourselves, the stories that we tell others, and the stories that we live out. If you believe in God or a higher power, you may also believe that they are the scriptwriter of your story. ie. your life has a script and you’re just following that. I used to think that about my journey too, until experience showed me different. I believe that I’m the screenwriter of my story. God is the Executive Producer & Director. As a screen writer, I can write multiple scripts throughout the course of my life. I have the opportunity to draft and re-draft the script based on the original idea, or an adaptation that I desire. Once I’ve done this, I can then trust my Director to review and adjust the scripts as well as select which ones to turn into films. I can trust the director to bring the right actors/cast who will fill the roles and bring my story to life. In post-production, I can trust my Director to work with the editors to cut and paste whatever He deems best for the films - His final cut.
Once I came to understand this about my life’s story, I chose to live my life not as a movie, but as an episodic series that is released in SEASONS. In every season I get to choose my story. I also get to embrace the AND - Adaora the Kingmaker, BTS, Servant Leader, AND Adaora the King, Influencer, Frontline Leader.
The beautiful thing about seasons is that they change over time. What this means is - you can be BTS in one season, IN FRONT in the next season, BTS in the next, IN FRONT in the next, BTS in the next…Ok I’ll stop - I think you catch my drift.
Not only are you the Protagonist of your story, you are also the screenwriter.
Allow your next season unfold!
