So you wanna crush the competition?
These days there are many messages about crushing the competition, and that makes me feel as though we’re in business to focus on ending someone else’s business. That’s a ruthless reason to be in business. I understand the concept of competitive advantage, and trying to improve upon existing products, ideas, models...etc. But I don’t think that focusing on competition is the only way to succeed. I believe there’s great power in focusing on what it is that you want to do, what problem it is that you want to solve, and finding collaborative ways to bring these visions to life. There’s a lot of power in collaboration - especially when you’re focused on solving for the betterment of humanity. That’s really what this entrepreneurship life is about. It’s about making the world better.
That being said… There is one situation in which I think it’s important to crush the competition. We often look at competition as “those who are in the same line of business as us.” They’re not competition, they’re complementing.” The real competition is the opposite of what you’re trying to achieve. For example, if you’re advocating for positive messaging and personal development, the competition is any message that is pulling people into a negative space. In this case, by all means, CRUSH THE COMPETITION!
